Description
It is believed that the Lingaraj temple was built by the Somavanshi King, Jajati Keshari in the period of 11th century. He has shifted his capital from Jajpur to Bhubaneswar and hence was interested to leave his mark on the new territory. The temple started getting constructed with Lord Shiva in his Lingam form. However, it took a lot of time to be built and subsequently the Jagannath form (which is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) became popular amongst the people. Hence, ultimately, the Harihara form, which represents co-existence of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu started to be worshipped here. The magnificent structure was built with about 50 other smaller enshrines. Since, both the Gods co-exist here, this is a place of great religious importance.
Importance/Significance
The temple is very important since it is the only one to contain a co-existed form of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu which is represented as Harihara. There is no single element which represents either of the Gods. Tulsi leaves (offered to Lord Vishnu) are offered long with Bela Leaves (offered to Lord Shiva). Perhaps it is the coexistence of two powerful Gods which is makes the place even more important.
