Description
Sri Karni Mata is the official deity of the royal family of Jodhpur and Bikaner. She was a female Hindu saint and her followers worship her as an incarnation of Maa Durga. She is also known as Nari Bari. The temple has devotees from all over the country and also draws in tourists.
History
Karni Mata's real name was Ridhu Bai. It is said that Goddess Durga herself came to her mother's dreams when she was about to be born and told that the child was her incarnation. She slowly became famous due to her supernatural powers. She once cured a person of a fatal disease and thus she came to be known as Karni. Though she was married, she lived like an ascetic. She blessed the kingdoms of Bikaner and Jodhpur with prosperity. Ganga Singh Bikaner built the Deshnok Sri Karni Mata Devi Temple in her honour. The temple is built of marble and has an idol with a “trishul”, similar to Goddess Durga. The temple is famous for the black or brown rats that live in the temple and are considered sacred. Thus it is also called the Rat Temple. There lies a story behind this too. It is said that when Karni Mata's stepson died, she asked the god of death, Yama to make the people of their tribe to be born as rats after death. Thus all the rats in the temple are treated as ancestors who have taken rebirth. It is considered lucky to spot a rat in the temple. There are some white rats too which are considered to be incarnations of Karni Mata herself and are especially holy.
Importance/Significance
The number of rats may scare you but they are harmless. They move around the devotees and are considered to be blessings of Karni Mata. It is said to the blessings of the Goddess that there has been no disease related to rats in Deshnoke till now. The temple opens for the general public at 4.00 a.m. All the offerings that are made to Karni Mata are fed to the holy rats first and then distrivuted among the devotees as Prasad.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The Karni Mata temple has visitors not only from Rajasthan but from the entire country. The major crowd throngs during Navratri. People visit the temple during this auspicious time, and some even come on foot to show their devotion. Many devotees even offer gold and silver to the goddess if she fulfills their prayers. Two fairs are held at Deshnoke in her honour and are called Karni Mata fair. Both are held during the Navratris, one during March-April and another during September-October. The fame of Deshnok Sri Karni Mata Devi Temple-Rat Temple is reaching far and wide with each passing day.
