The Gangaikonda choleshwarar Shiva Temple is a magnificent temple dedicated to lord Shiva which is situated in Gangaikondacholapuram in Tanjavur district which is found in the state of Tamil Nadu. The place is very well connected by roads and can be easily reached by taxi or buses from any part of the state. Dedicated to lord Shiva, the temple witnesses approximately thousands of devotees all-round the year.
History
Historians believe that the temple was built around the 11th century as is inferred from the inscriptions on the inner wall so the temple. It was built by King Rajendra Chola who belonged to the chola dynasty. In those times, the dynasty was ruling a major part of South India and had set foot in some territories of north India too. Repeated success in various warfare where reflected in their wealth accumulation. Using this wealth, King Rajendra decided to leave a mark of Cholas in the form of a magnificent temple. He took a pot and brought the sacred Ganga waters in it. Later on the temple was built and it was named as Gangaikonda choleshwarar which was derived from the word Gangaikondan which means the one who brings water from the sacred Ganges River. Since then, the temple has been worshipped for Lord Shiva and it is considered auspicious to bathe the lingam with water from the Ganges River.

This temple has a nine storey structure which speaks of its magnificence. Further, there is a sanctum which has a display of unique bronze artifacts that belonged to the Chola period. The intricate sculptures and carvings that adorn the wall are also very different. Sculptures depicting the Ardhanareshwar form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are also crafted here on the walls. Its rich architecture is the main attraction of the temple

The temple has a separate sanctum which is partially closed by the two walls to provide a private area for events to be organized. Seeking blessings of Lord Shiva, the temple is considered ideal for organizing events such as engagements and marriage ceremonies. Many festivals are also observed here. Mahashivratri, Ekadashi are the special occasions which witnesses thousands of devotees every year, who are said to come from all parts of the world, to take part in the festivities.
