Hyderabad Akkanna Madanna Mahankali Devi Temple located in Telengana is a famous temple of the Hindus in South India. It is not far away from the Charminar and is just 20 kilometres away from the Secunderaband Railway Station. The name of the temple comes from the name of its makers, the two brothers, Akanna and Madanna. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahankali. The festival of Bonalu is celebrated here with lots of pomp.
History
This temple was made somewhere in the 17th century. Two Brahmana brothers, Akkanna and Madanna laid the foundation of the temple in the Golkonda Sultanate which existed from around 1674 to 1685. The two brothers were Tana Shah's Commander in Chief and also the Prime Minister. Tana Shah is also known as Abdul Hassan Qutub Shah. He was the last king of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Madanna and Akkanna daily worshipped the Mahankali idol in a nearby temple beside the palace of the king where they lived. They left for the Golconda fort only after performing prayers before Goddess Mahankali. The Mughals attacked the kingdom and the two brothers died in the war. When the reign of Tana Shah came to an end, the temple was transformed into the 'devdi' of the Nawabs. The idol of Goddess Mahankali still remained there. In 1948, it was dug up and the ruins of the temple were found. The idol of Goddess Mahankali was still there among some holy books and some utensils. The temple was reconstructed and 67 years have passed after it has been revived.
Importance/Significance
Akkanna and Madanna are remembered through the name of the temple due to their significance as great administrators in the Telegana region. Since the temple was found out in 1948 through the cooperation of the devdi owner and other local Muslims, and they helped in the revival of the temple, it stands as a symbol of goodwill and brotherhood between Hindus and Muslims.
Facts/Mythology
When the temple was ruined after the Mughal attack on the Golconda Sultanate, a long time passed and nobody remembered the temple anymore. After about 300 years, it is said that the Goddess Mahankali wished to be worshipped again and came in the dream of a lady giving her the directions regarding the ruined temple which was hidden then. She narrated the dream and hearing it people took the initiative to revive the ancient temple.
