History
It is said that Maha Guru Agastya or Agasthiyar and his consort Lopamudra Devi used to worship the goddess here on the days of Navaratri and Shivaratri. Agastya rishi or sage is one of the Saptarishis or seven sages mentioned multiple times in the Vedas. He was one of the earliest Siddhars. Siddhars are saints of Saivaite inclination in Tamil Nadu who performed a kind of unorthodox practice to attain spiritual liberation. They are the Indian version of 'mystics'.
Importance/Significance
The Akilandeshwari Devi is known here as Karuvalarakkum Nayagi. It means the goddess who gives her blessings to the growing fetus. The goddess of the temple is said to bless the unborn foetus and protect it. Pregnant women are made to visit the pilgrim spot to seek growth and protection of the fetus in their womb. There are two specific sacred spots here, one to bless the expectant woman with growth of her baby and the other to protect the fetus. It is believed that the goddess here is the giver and the protector of life. Her blessing is with a person from the conception to birth and is as important as the Garbharakshambika temple, among Hindu devotees regarding the issue of childbirth. The temple spot is an Agastiar Guru Paduka Shakti spot and it is said to promote and bless the growth of Guru Bhakti. Satguru Venkatraman has given the meaning of Karuvalarcheri as Guruvalarcheri, wherein the Guru implies Bhakti or Devotion to Guru and Valarcheri signifies the holy area that helps to spread the true devotion to the true Guru.
Facts/Mythology
The Karuvalarcheri Akilandeshwari Devi Temple is called “swayambhu” or self manifested because it is said to have been formed on its own according to divine wishes. It is believed by devotees that the resident deity blesses women with children. Women who wish to have children visit the temple and perform rituals like cleaning the steps of the temple with ghee or clarified butter. The mother in turn blesses these women with an offspring. However, devotees can only see the face of the goddess and her full body can only be seen on special days like navaratri.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The temple has visitors throughout the year but on normal days they can see only the face of the Goddess Akilandeshwari. On occasions like Shivaratri and Navaratri the devotees can see the entire figure of the Goddess. These are the major festivals celebrated here. The Goddess is allowed to be seen on each of the nine days of Navaratri held during September- October. The women who come here to be blessed with a child have to perform elaborate rituals which are explained to them and they have to follow them.
