Description
Bhoramdeo Shiva Temple is one of the famous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva which is located in Kawardha which is in in the Kabhirdham district of Chattisgarh. Lying amidst the mountain ranges, the temple is surrounded by an aura which is simply mesmerizing. It is located at a distance of 18 km from Kawardha and is well connected by roads. Taxis and cabs are easily available till the temple spot. The nearest railway station as the nearest airport is also in Raipur.
History
The exact year of built of this magnificent temple is unknown.However; it is believed that it was built during the 7th and 11th century. While some historians believe that the Emperor RamchandraDeo of Nagwanshi was the main builder, others believe that it was King Gopaldev of the Faninag Dynasty. King GopalDev was a staunch supporter of Lord Shiva and hence was instrumental in designing this temple. But archaeologists believe that this temple was solely built and dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Importance/Significance
KawardhaBhoramdeo Shiva Temple is of great significance. It contains a Shiva Linga inside the structure of the temple which is called the GarbhaGrih. It artistically rests on 16 pillars. It is believed that couples wishing for children or individuals who are unmarried receive blessings on worshipping this pious temple. Lord Shiva is also considered a destroyer of evil and hence many consider this as a significant place for worshipping before starting any new work.
Facts/Mythology
The artistic beauty is the main attraction of this temple. Architectural is grand and the intrinsic sculptures speak of the rich culture. The main temple has basically two parts. One is completely carved out of a single stone while the other part is known as Ishtika. Mandap, Natral and Garbhagrih are the three important features which depict areas allocated for shelter, passage and the main resting area of the God respectively. Basically the Lord Shiva is worshipped here in the form of Shiva Linga. What makes this place unique is the art and sculptures which is very nicely engrafted in the walls of the temple. The Ramcharitakatha is depicted here in the form of art. There are also 54 erotic sculptures which denote the Kamasutra poses and assanas in a very beautiful way. The intrinsic carvings with the playfulness of the art speak of the rich culture prevalent in those times. In addition there are many idols in the shrine like that of Tandul Shivgang, Nritya Ganesh, Kartikeya, Kaal, Bhairava, Surya, Krishna, Natraj, Uma-maheswar, Narishma, Vaman, etc. which are beautifully sculpted. There is also another unique fact about this temple. It somewhat has a resemblance with the Konarktemple( also known as Sun temple) which is located in Odisha and the Khajurao temple. Hence, some refer to this temple as the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh.
