Jagadambika Devi Temple has set amidst a beautiful scenic beauty which engulfs and embraces the monument in a very promising manner. Situated in Khajuraho, which is a world Heritage site as embarked by UNESCO. Even the accessibility is very easy, whether it is by air, road or rail. Khajuraho has an Airport and also a well-designed Railway Station. Khajuraho is situated in the “Chattarpur” district of Madhya Pradesh and it is known worldwide for its Rich Architecture. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kali who is worshipped here in the form of Maa Jagadambika.
History
Archaeologists and Historians believe that the temple was made in the span of 25 years i.e. (1000 AD to 1025 AD), by the past rulers of the Chandela Dynasty. The actual history of how the rulers built this place and their motivation for the same is still unknown till date. However, there are certain indications which point to the fact that the temple was originally dedicated to the “Lord Vishnu” as the temple's idol is encrypted in the sanctum door and faces the east-west direction.
Importance/Significance
Jagadambika Devi Temple is dedicated to Maa Jagadambika, which means the Goddess of the Universe. Hence, this is considered a very sacred place and attracts a large number of devotees from all over the world. Maa is considered very powerful and her blessings are as valuable as a treasure. There is another importance of the temple. Idols of Lord Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu are found here holding their consorts. The presences of the three lords who are known as the makers of the universe are considered very religious and hold spiritual importance.
Facts/Mythology
There is no clear picture about the myths behind this temple. Some believe that the temple was dedicated to Goddess Parvati which is placed here by painting her idol black. Others believe that the temple is dedicated to Maa Kali who is also known as Maa Jagadambika. The idols are enshrined in the Garbhagrih of the sanctum, are worshipped with lot of dedications by married women. Some of the myths are derived from the amazing architecture that the temple encapsulates. There are various beautifully inscribed sculptures in different poses which are placed along the interior as well as the exterior walls of the temple. Erotic sculptures are also depicted here in the most gracious form. All these speak of the rich culture of those times which the time has preserved. The architecture of the temple also consists of a Mandap.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Since the temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kali and Goddess Parvati some of the noteworthy festivals which are celebrated here are Maha Shivratri, Kali puja and Navratri. All these festivals are celebrated on a grand scale, with proper rituals and bhog offerings. Sometimes, the Mandap is also allocated for special functions such as Marriages. Jagadambika Devi Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradhesh is one of the famous tourist attraction spots and hence is considered a worthwhile visiting religious spot with family and friends.
