KandariyaMahadev Shiva Temple is situated in a small town of Khajuraho, which is situated in the Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Khajuraho is well known for its sculptures which speaks volume of the intrinsic carvings which was prevalent in the medieval times. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple preserves the Lingam in a very unique form.
History
Historians consider the KandariyaMahadev Shiva Temple to be built in 1000 BC by the King Dhangadeva, who belonged to the Chandela dynasty and was inarguably the most powerful king of those times. Khajuraho was the then capital of the Chandela and hence, the king considers building a temple in order to make his mark. It turned out to be one of the magnificent temples in the Western India known for its beautiful sculptures and carvings which are endorsed both on the inner as well as the outer walls of the temple. Undoubtedly, it stands as a unique feature and the most desirable tourist destination spot for tons of devotees all over the world.
Importance/Significance
Kandariya Mahadev Shiva Temple is considered very significant since it is the only largest and magnificent temple present in Western India. This temple consists of all the tree forms of trinity- Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Lord Shiva idol's is portrayed holding a snake and trident in his hands. Lord Vishnu is seated to his left and Lord Brahma to his right. Since, all the three forms of trinity can be worshipped at one place itself, Kandariya Mahadev Shiva Temple is considered as one of the sacred spot in India.
Facts/Mythology
The magnificence of this temple along with the intricate carvings which speak of the rich culture prevalent in the medieval ages is well preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. This is a part of UNESCO world heritage site in Khajuraho and hence is famous worldwide. The temple rises to about 31 meters of height representing Mount Kailash which is the house of Lord Shiva. It is surrounded by 84 miniature spires which are called Urushringas. The main sanctum contains the Shiva Lingam which is made of pure white marble. Devotees can worship this lingam while visiting this temple. The entire temple is considered to have almost 870 sculptures engraved in outer and inner walls each measuring at least 1 meter. All this makes the KandariyaMahadev Shiva Temple unique it in own sense
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
As the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the main events celebrated here are Mahashivratri and Savan. Regular rituals are performed on all the days of Savan and the temple attracts thousands of devotees from far and wide in this period. The temple is also considered a sacred place for gatherings and functions such as marriages and mundane ceremony. This internationally acclaimed spot is a must visit with family and friends.
