Description
Komuravelli 'Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Devasthanam' is one of the most famous Shiva temples in the region of northern Telangana, Andhra Pradesh. It is next to the Rajarajeshwara Swamy Temple-Vemulawada and Mukteshwara Swamy Temple-Kaaleshwaram that are considerably popular amongst the populace. The pilgrims often call out to the god as 'Komaravelli Mallana'. The temple is placed in a cavern on the 'Indrakeeladri' hillock at a distance of 110 Kms from Warangal. The exclusiveness of this temple is that the lord Shiva can be witnessed here in the 'Vigraha Rupam' (statue) in contrast to the usual 'Linga rupam' that is often seen in the temples across the country. The temple is maintained by the Endowments Department of the state government. Annually, countless number of pilgrims visit this temple on the eve of Makara Sankranthi since the Brahmotsavam starts in Komauravelli at this time of the year.
History
Lord Mallikarjuna once arrived in the dream of a simple yet, thoroughly devoted shepherd. The lord told him that the creation of the hill was credited to him Indrakeeladri himself, and enshrined in it in a Putta Matti(Soft earth ) to grant the desires and wishes of the devotees and worshippers. There is firm belief even today amongst the devotees that their wants and desires are fulfilled by worshipping the deity Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Devasthanam.
