Male Mahadeswara Hills also called as MM Hills is a temple city located in east part of Kolegal taluka, Chamarajnagar district of Karnataka. The MM Hills is about 210 Kms from Bangalore and 142 Kms from Mysore. The temple here in MM Hills, dedicated to Lord Mahadeswara, the manifestation of Lord Shiva. Male Mahadeeswara Hills is one of the sacred places for Shavaiths i.e the worshippers of lord Shiva. Thousands of devotees visit Male Mahadeeswara Hills from the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Devotees who come here believe in having a holy dip in Antaragangai (River Ganga from deep), close to the shrine, this is a strange water which flows from the ground and comes out throughout the year and the source is not yet identified.
History
The epic story of Mahadeshwara describes the life and miracles of the saint. The external structure of the story looks a lot like theHindu epic Ramayanam: Lord Shiva manifests himself on earth as Mahadeswara to destroy a wicked king called Shravansura. The epic has & parts, and normally only certain parts are sung as dictated by the taste of the audience or patron. However, the entire epic is sung by some pilgrims on their way to the annual fair on the Mahadeshwara hills; and it may last for seven consecutive nights.
Facts/Mythology
It is believed by the local tribals and villagers that Saint Mahadeshwara was an incarnation of Lord Shiva who came down to earth to destroy an evil king, Shravanasura. He is believed to have performed many miracles and he rode on a tiger. His legend is recounted as an epic in 7 parts by the locals in the Janapada folk style. The story bears a resemblance to the ancient Indian Epic Ramayana. Historically, Saint Mahadeshwara is believed to have lived in the 15th century. It is believed that he came here to perform meditation. People believe he is still continuing his Tapas inside the temple in the form of a Linga. The Janapada singers of his legend belong to the Kuruba community. The singing group are called as 'Devaara Guddha' or God's child, also as 'Kamsaleyavaaru', since they always keep bronze cymbals with them which are called Kamsaale. They are initiated into the art form when very young and are expected to lead a disciplined life. The shrine has a major segment of the nearby land and also possesses the lands in adjacent villages. The temple was constructed by a wealthy landlord of the Kurubha tribe, Junje Gowdha.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Poojas and Archana are done thrice in a day. The first worship of the day starts in early morning at 05.30. Rudrabhisheka is made between morning 6.00 and 8.00 and again between 10.30 AM and 12 Noon. The evening poojas are performed between 6.30 PM and 8.00 PM. Sankashta Chathurti Poojas are performed on New Moon and Full Moon day of every month. Maha Shivaratri and Deepavali are celebrated in a very grand manner. For devotees and pilgrims there is Dasoha Bhavana, where free food offered throughout the year. One can find places to live and lodging at guest houses and hotels at MM Hills. Also there are several small temples and other holy places nearby the MM hills
