History
The history of the temple is centuries old. The place was ruled by the Cholas and is known to be built in the Pallava Era which is like 1600 years ago. The temple has ancient inscriptions. The temple was rebuilt and revamped by the British collector Colonel Lionel Blaze. There are deities of Lord Rama his wife Sita and younger brother Laxman.
Facts/Mythology
British officer Colonel Lionel Blaze was the collector from 1795 to 1799 of the Chengalpattu district in Tamil Nadu. During his regime Colonel Lionel noticed breaches with respect to the huge tank occupying the size of 13 square miles and 21 feet deep. The Collector was finding ways to get through the breaches but nothing seemed to work out. He had seen some stones and granites near the Rama temple. The collector thought of using these stones and granites for the tanks refurbishment purpose and informed about the same to the temple priest. The temple priest conveyed his displeasure and said that the stones were kept aside so that they can be used for temples construction purpose. The Collector did not understand the logic behind the argument as the tank repair was quite crucial at that point of time. The priest still stood by his words and said that God would take care of everything.Soon monsoons arrived and the collector was worried about the bunds. As the rain started pouring heavily the collector went near the tank to inspect and understand the situation. He saw two men with bow and arrow guarding the tank. Surprisingly none of the other officials were able to see these two mysterious men. The collector was sure that these two men where none another than Lord Rama and his younger brother Laxman. He went on his knees and started praying. After that incident the collector himself undertook the construction of temple and since then the deity of Lord Rama installed there is known as Erikata Rama (Lord Ram who guarded the tank). The tank still stands tall there today at Maduranthagam Yeri Katha Ramar.
