Mettupalayam Vanabhadra Kaliamman Devi Temple is located in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. This is dedicated to Goddess Kali and witnesses thousands of devotees all year round.
History
The exact date of construction of this temple is unknown. However, historians believe that this way built long back in time. Once, Goddess Shakti was undertaking a deep penance in the forest of Vena. The meditation was for Lord Shiva to grant her power to kill the demon and the asura Mahashashura. After days together, her prayers were answered and Lord Shiva also gave her darshan. Since, Shakti is another form of Maa Kaali and the penance was done in the forest of Vana, the temple started to be known as Vanabhadra Kaliamman Devi. There are also certain legends which points to the fact that Beema and Abhimanyu achieved success in their respective tasks after worshipping Maa Vanabhadra Kaliamman Devi and since then the Goddess has been considered to be ever powerful.
Importance/Significance
Mettupalayam Vanabhadra Kaliamman Devi Temple holds high religious importance, Maa Kali is considered to be all powerful and people pray to her for removing all the evils from one's life. Married women put their Mangalsutra in the handi in order to seek blessings and happiness in their married life. There is also a sacred tree in this temple and people believe that those who tie a stone to the tree are blessed with a child. The all-powerful Maa Kali blesses her devotees with health, wealth and happiness. Some people also perform the sheep sacrifice in order to please the Goddess. There is another important feature of this temple as per belief. After thinking about a particular wish, one needs to put two different color flowers, red and white in two separate packets and offer it to the Goddess. The rituals are performed and after completion of the puja, if one gets the flower of his choice, it is deemed that his wishes are granted by the Lord. Unmarried women also keep fast in order to seek blessings for a good life partner.

A unique fact about this temple is that the idol of Vanabhadra Kaliamman Devi is Swayambhu or self-manifested form and hence is considered to be very sacred.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
One of the famous festivals which are celebrated in this temple is the Pookundam fire pits which are held in the month of July. This is a grand festival which attracts thousands of people. The puja begins from the first Tuesday. Then a huge 36 feet fire pit which is called the Pookundam is lit on the second Tuesday and subsequent rituals are performed on the next Tuesday. Special puja's are also observed on every Fridays. People throng the temple especially on these two days. There are also certain events like dance and drama which portray the legend behind the temple in an artistic manner. Apart from this other noteworthy festivals which are celebrated here are Pongal, Navratri and Deepavali. Tamil New year also is considered to be special and the entire temple is decorated on that day.
