History
This temple was established in the name of Goddess Durga Parameshwari. It was built by a Muslim architect Bappa, hence, the name Bappanadu meaning Bappa's village. Being one of the main Shakti worship centers, the temple is visited by thousands of devotees. The symbolic statue is in the form of a Linga. As a characteristic and an amazing feature that recognizes two religious groups without any distinction between them, the Muslim people are allowed to visit and take the Prasad from the temple and lend helping hands during the festivals.
Importance/Significance
The Muslims and the Hindus pray together and take part in the festivities of the temple together. One factor of celebration that is observed, especially in Karnataka is beating of the drums, and Bappanadu Dolu excels in this. The number of drums in Milky Durga Parameshwari Devi Temple exceeds other temples in Karnataka. Earlier, when the local rulers and landlords visited the temple, the progression was marked with the beating of the drums and even now it sees no less.
Facts/Mythology
Like every story, with the victory of good over evil and right over wrong the legend of the establishment of this temple runs back to the time when an evil entity, named Darigasura ruled Shonitapura with terror. He did an austere penance and attained a boon from Lord Brahma to defeat Lord Vishnu and the other devatas. After defeating them, he kept all their ammunitions and gave it to his wife Bhagawati. In order to save the devatas, Goddess Durga Parameshwari appeared in the form of seven women (Sapta Durgas) in Shonitpura, accompanied by a deity named Guliga. Tricking Darigasura into a falsehood, the goddess took over the ammunitions. Realizing the trick played against him, he waged a war against the Goddess and defeated deity Guliga, but got defeated on the seventh day himself, after which he escaped to the Underworld. Goddess Durga Parameshwari took form of Goddess Bhadra Kali, and searched and killed him.
