Description
Mundkur is an amazing city of temples which is situated at the Karkala district of Karnataka. Mundkur Durga Parameshwari Temple Karkala Coastal Karnataka is believed to be more than 1300 years old and is a wonderful place to visit. The primary deity worshipped here is Goddess Durga Parameshwari through Mahishamardini, where Goddess Durga is killing the demon Mahisha with her thrishul (weapon). There are several shrines for other deities which have been preserved in this age old temple. The other deities worshipped here are many Hindu Gods and Goddesses like Ganapati, Vaarahi, Dhoomvathi, Navagraha etc.
Importance/Significance
Gurumeru is a very famous place of tourist interest which is situatated at the north eastern part of Mundkur. This place is very well surrounded by the various dense forests and beautiful hills with the natural fountains which look great. This place is well packed with natural scenic appeal and you can see some special types of snakes and wild animals and birds like parrots.In the other side of Mundkur, a place known as Gurumeru can be well seen where the water is always available in the forests and hills, which is said to be the place where the Bhargava Gothra community and the sages used for the Penance and the Relaxation. The place has got the natural scenic appeal and is visited by numerous tourists all through the year.
Facts/Mythology
The overall creativity of the festival Mundkur is that it is being well surrounded by Shambhavi flow on the three sides of the temple namely the southern, western and eastern ends. Four temples dedicated to Shiva, the major God worshipped by the Hindus are located around Mundkur. There are several other temples which are built in various directions surrounding the main temple. All these have brilliant architecture and are of great religious and tourist significance.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Annual Car festival is organized in the Kumbha masa every year which is celebrated on the seventeenth and eighteenth of Feb every year. Nagara Sankeerthane is very well performed in Karthika Masa, throughout the days in that month accompanied by various other traditional rituals and poojas. Madhva Navami, Vadiraja Swami thithi and Sri Raghavendra Swami Aradhana are also identified through the means of the bhajans and the various ritual Poojas. On the day of Ganesh Chathurthi, the auspicious Ganesha vigraha is being worshipped with much pomp and show, then on the 5th day evening after the Fancy Dress named mosaru Kudike with the procession immersed is a remarkable event which is being much awaited. During the period of the Navarathri, the nine types of the Durga Alankaara is being given to the idol, which is not very common in Karnataka.
