Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Devi Temple is one of the famous temples in the state of Tamil Nadu. Situated in Gobichettypalayam, it attracts followers and devotees from all over the world. Its religious sanctity is revealed in the myriad festivals which are observed on a yearly basis.
History
Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Devi Temple is believed to be renovated in 1950's. The initial structure was built by the last patron King Pari who is believed to be a staunch supporter of Goddess Arulmigu Kondathu Kaliamman and hence is considered as the builder of this magnificent temple.The temple is also of great importance considering its architectural value. It falls under the category of Amman temple and encompasses five storeys. The interior of the temple is made of black marble which is covered by the mandapan. The main entry which is also called the Gopuram is in the south of the temple. There are many intricate carvings and idols of deities. Chinna Amman is a miniature form of the main Goddess which finds a separate place in the shrine. Separate idols dedicated to Siddhi Vinayagar, Sri Pon Kaliamman, Kannimar and Sri Maha Muniappan are also found .It is considered that Sri Maha Muniappan is the destroyer of all evil and a savior of the children. In addition statues of Lord Maheswarari, Gowmar, Vaishnavi, Brammanhi, Mahendri and Chamundi décor the entire enshrine. The idol of the main Goddess faces south and has a crown of fire on her head which is studded with Rudra. The idol showcases her killing a demon which signifies end of all evil. Lion is the main vehicle of the Goddess and hence is worshipped with all care and devotion. The architectural epitome speaks of elegance and grandeur prevalent in those times.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Many significant festivals are observed in this temple. The famous 'Fire walking ceremony' which consists a 40 feet long Kundam attracts thousands of devotes every year in the month of January. Kumbhabhishekam is also celebrated once in every 12 years. This involves procession of the Goddess in Golden chariot followed by free midday meal for all. A golden Kavach is also offered to the Deities. In addition, there are other festivals which are observed such as Car festival, Navratri, Pongal, Tamil near year- Chithirai Kani and Adi Perukku. Being of religious importance, it also considered a pious place for marriages.
