Vayu, the God of Wind and Adhisesha, the divine serpent, were involved in a mutual challenge as to whose physical prowess was mightier. Adishesha restrained the Meru mount with his might. Vayu blew destructively in order to break it. The piece which fell is known as Pavala Malai. You should be aware that Muruga chose Palani as His abode since he was not given the mango in a duel. He was blessed by Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi, who said that every hill shall become His abode. The temple of n Pavala Malai was built by devotees who were of the Kanavala Kula community.

Ippasi is the seventh month of the Tamil year. The Pooja is held on the 6th day after the new moon day (Amavasai Day). On Sashti day, the six faced Lord Subramaniyam demolished Soorabanman the most fearful Asuran, who imprisoned the Devas, and the Devas were freed by the Lord. It is for this reason that this festival is celebrated in all Murugan Temples in the world and more specifically in a very grand manner at Thiruchenthur Lots of devotees attends this festival that takes place there, for three days. This festival finally ends with the sangaram (destruction of all evils) and the bestowment of the Lords' blessings and grace to the freed souls.
