There is a beautiful legend behind this temple. When Lord Shiva decided to get married to Goddess Parvathy, Devi, devtas, rishi, muni's all gathered to witness the divine marriage ceremony. Because of the huge crowd that had gathered, north part of the earth went down while the south part came up. The imbalance started creating problem for the dwellers on earth. Hence, Lord Shiva requested Muni Agasthya to go to the southern part which was the Piranmalai, so that equilibrium can be brought on the earth. Agasthya agreed for the same however he was really very sad at the fact that he was the alone one that would be unable to see the wedding. Hence, lord Shiva granted him a wish that on his way he could ask for the darshan of Lord Shiva anytime and he would appear to bestow his blessings. Piranmalai was one such location where Muni Agasthya sought the darshan of the all-powerful Lord Shiva. Later on the temple was built on the same spot.
