There are around eighty four divya desams (viashnava temple much-loved by Alwaars) which are particularly located in Tamilnadu out of one hundred and eight and two hundred and sixty four saiva sanctuary (much-loved by Devaram printed by Appar, Sundar and Thirunavukarasar) out of two hundred and seventy four in inida.
History
Once Madhavendra pur was on his way to get some sandalwood for his Sri Gopal deity in Vrindavana around 5 centuries ago. When he congested saw Sri Gopinath at Remuna , looking at him his empathy was overflowing with dedication and happiness. Then he was offered by delicious khira to the idol, so he wished to taste some of it so that he could present the same preparation to Sri Gopala.The Madhavendra only accepts the food which is given to him spontaneously, and he rarely asked anything. So he left the temple without tasting the khira since he was not presented by any of it. The Pujari then rested after concluding the adoration to Gopinath. When he was taking rest Gopinath came in his dreams and woke him up and give the jar of khira to Madhavendra that he had secreted beneath his clothes. The Pujari suddenly woke up, found the Khir, and brought the Khir and gave that to Madhavendra. The Pujare said to him that it was for you Sri Gopinath have filched khira. There is no other lucky person like you. This is how Gopinatha got an alternate name "Khir Chor Gopinata".
Importance/Significance
There are 8 holy leap including Chandrapushkarani and Suryapushkarani.This type of sanctuary are established everywhere in India from huge epic buildings to minute stone structures, each of these temple plays certain significant role and greatly influencing the lives of the people who regard the temple as a place where they could be close to god . The sanctuary is constructed on 100 acres of land with enormous number of attractive idols speaking volumes of the outstanding sculptural skills in Tamilnadu. They are very famous and significant. The main column, at Rajagopuram is the largest in India.

The devotees from all parts of the country come to visit this temple throughout the year. On every event and festival the local residents come to visit the sanctuary. The western devotees frequently visit this sanctuary; the presiding deity in temple is named as Sri Radhe Kshira Chor Gopinath.
