ShenbagapuramAdiKumbeshwaraVinayagarGanapathy Temple is an ancient temple situated in the small town of Kumbakonam in Shenbagapuram. This lies in the Nagai district in the state of Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is temple is one of the famous tourists spots in the state.
History
Historians believe that the actual temple was built somewhere in the 7th century. However, during the period of Nayaks (between 15th and 17th century), the temple underwent loads of changes including expansion and renovation to the form that what we see today.Legends unfold the story that the name of the town has been derived from the mystical pot of Lord Brahma which was called the Kumbh. Long back, the pot was displaced due to some unknown force in the universe which led to the event of Lord Shiva striking an arrow on the pot. The arrow brought the pot to a particular spot which is today known as theKumbakonam town. The nectar fell in to two places in some pious tanks whose water is considered sacred till date. This event is celebrated as the Mahamaham festival which is of great significance and is observed in every 12 years.

ShenbagapuramAdiKumbeshwaraVinayagarGanapathy is known for its unique set of silver carving which adorn the walls of the sanctum. The sixteen pillared hall which encompasses 27 stars in it along with 12 intrinsic carvings similar to that of the zodiac signs is the main attraction. What makes it even more unique is the fact that the whole thing is carved out of a block of single stone. This speaks of the great architecture which was prevalent in those times. This is also a temple which has idol of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvathi in the form of Goddess Mangalambigai. Depicting a perfect Dravidian style of architecture, the temple stands as monument rich in culture.

One of the most important festivals celebrated in this temple is the Mahamaham festival which is observed once in every 12 years. This is usually held in the month of February or March and holds a significant religious position. Throngs of people flock to this place in order to take bath in the holy tank of Mahamaham. This festival is very popular because of the grand scale in which this is celebrated. Various events are organized inside this temple for festival and a big carnival is the main attraction. Tourists and devotees make it a point to visit the temple during this period to witness the grandeur which is one of its kinds.
