History
Getting in to the history of this Selva Vinayagar Ganapathy Temple once all the Vinayagars who are also known as the Swayambu Vinayagars were concealed under the ground. Thukoji who was a minister in Maharashtra was traveling on the same road were Swayambu Vinayagars were buried. His chariot was broke and he had to halt at that place but when he got down from his chariot, he saw blood coming out of that place. He considered that as an obstacle for his journey and halted there. Thukoji prayed to Lord Vinayagar and went to sleep and in his dream Lord Vinayagar appeared and told that he was concealed at the place where his chariot broke and asked him to construct a temple for him. Thukoji followed the instructions of Lord Vinayagar and brought out of the underground and constructed a temple at that place.
Importance/Significance
Swayambakkam was the original name of this place as Lord Vinayagar appeared as Swayambu in this place and later changed to Shenbakkam. There is another name for this village and that is Shenbagavanam. The reason why this place is called as Shenbagavanam is the village was full of the Shenbaga but you cannot find even a single tree now in that place. Another importance of this place is you have Virinchipuram Margabandeswarar Swayambu linga temple which is very near to Shenbakkam Selva Vinayagar Ganapathy Temple-Shenbakkam, Vellore in Tamil Nadu. Aadhi Sankarar visited this temple and found about the Selva Vinayagar Ganapathy Temple through his spiritual powers. Then Aadhi Sankarar visited this temple and also installed Sri Charka on the esanya corner which is now present below one the pillars in this temple.
Facts/Mythology
Apart from Selva Vinayagar Ganapathy, there are 11 more Vinayagars in this temple. You can also visit Somasundareswarar who is present in the form of Linga in a separate Shrine in this temple. The Idol of Selva Vinayagar Ganapathy was fully covered with Silver covering. This covering was made 75 years ago and it covered the entire idol at that time but now it is covering just the 2/3rd part of the idol which indirectly indicates that the statue is growing in size.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Vinayagar Chaturthi is the main festival of this temple but Navratri and Diwali are also celebrated very grandly at this temple. You can get moksham from any health and mental problems at this temple.
