Description
Sholinghur Yoganarasimhar Temple is a famous temple which is situated in the small town of Vellore in Tamil Nadu. It is very well connected by roads and railways. The temple forms a part of the 108 Divyadesams, shrines dedicated solely to Lord Vishnu and hence is considered very pious. The temple is built atop a hill and the scenic beauty here makes it is worth visiting
Importance/Significance
The temple is considered to be very important in terms of religious beliefs. There is a big round tank called the TakkanKulam. Devotees bathe in this tank and then worship the lord to get rid of any negative energy. The water in the tank is also very sacred and it is believed to have some magical properties which can cure various kinds of skin diseases. An approximate 1305 steps have to be climbed to reach to the main sanctum which is considered as a yagna for the devotees. The lord grants wishes of one and all who visit the temple with devotion. A unique fact about the temple is that it is beautifully designed atop a hill with a tank of water inside its arena. This is unique to the temple since having a tank of water on top of a hill is very rare. All the more, the temple has been standing on the hill top for centuries and has not been damaged by any natural catastrophe of any kind. The source of the water in the tank is unknown; however, it contains special properties which make it useful in terms of medicinal values.
Facts/Mythology
There is a legend behind this story. It is believed that after Lord Vishnu defeated Hiranyakashipu in the form of Lord Narasimha, he returned back to the top of the hills of Sholunghur to take rest. Here he found seven rishis who very undergoing deep repentance in order to get the blessings of the Lord. The lord was pleased with their sincere devotion and dedication and granted moksha to all the seven rishis. Hence, this place also came to be known as Kadikachalam. Long afterwards, a temple was built atop the hill, marking this special spot. Who actually built it and during which period it was built is still not known till date. Since, then the temple finds the idol of Lord Vishnu with 4 hands, holding Shank and Chakra in two of them and the other two representing the meditation posture.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Brahmotsavam is one of the famous festivals which are celebrated in this temple with great pomp. The festival lasts for about 10 days and is held on a grand scale attracting thousands of devotees and tourists. Other noteworthy festivals observed here are Panguni Uthiram and Vivaha Mahotsavam. The marriage of the two lords, Bhaktochitar with Goddess Sudhavalli Thayar is also celebrated here every year. These are followed by entertaining events like dramas and nataks along with serving of food and Prasad. This is definitely a perfect religious spot to visit with near and dear ones.
