Description
The Shyam Kaka Sri Krishna Temple in Madhya Pradesh is just about 100 kilometers away from the capital city, Bhopal. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna who is also called Shyamji in India by Hindu devotees. Shyam is one of the various names like Gopal, MurliManohar, Kanhaiya, Madan Mohan ascribed to Lord Krishna. It is situated in a village called ShakaJagir in Rajgarh. The temple is a representative of ancient Indian architecture and though it is primarily a Hindu temple, it has some Muslim history connected to it, which is evident from the panel works. It depicts the perfect cultural harmony of India.
History
The temple was built in 1845 A.D. The history behind it is that there was a local ruler in the place during that time called ShyamDevKhinchi. One day his wife Bhagali Devi left him after a quarrel and took shelter in the place of a chieftain whose name was Amar Singh Gurjar. Later when Sham Dev was killed in a battle, his wife decided to erect a temple in his memory. She ordered this Krishna temple to be built and Amar Singh Gurjar was made the head priest of that temple. His family has been serving as the traditional priests of the Shyam Kaka Sri Krishna Temple since then. The temple is a protected site as declared by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Importance/Significance
Though the temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, one of the panels in the temple show a unique sight of six men in traditional Muslim long robes and headgear, sitting down and offering namaz. They are seen in various stages of their namaz and what is particularly striking is that the devotion and awe in the faces of these men are every evident from the architectural excellence. Such a brilliant example of Indian architecture speaks volumes about the cultural heritage of our country which had reached its peak in the early ages.
Facts/Mythology
The temple has carvings of six Muslim men offering namaz. The legendary story behind this unique fact is that six Arab men came to the temple when it was being constructed and began to assert that their religion was the greatest and that Mecca and Medina were the holiest. Amar Singh Gurjar challenged them that he could make them see Mecca and Medina there itself without taking them anywhere. The Arabs challenged him to show and at that time there was a revelation within the temple showing them Mecca and Medina within the temple. The Arabs were astonished and began to pray then and there. This incident showing cultural unity and religious harmony is depicted through the architecture. To commemorate the incident the temple has a panel showing these six men in various stages of their namaz. It preaches religious unity and tolerance as a part of our culture.
