Description
Our land is filled with precious gems and pearls blessed by the sages of yore. A land linked by plenty of roads and resting places, spotted with watering holes. Always an auspicious and rich land brimming with wealth and well-being, our beloved Kangeyam, is noted for its fertility, fame and valour!."These are the words that are sung from the hearts of the people residing at Kangeyam, one of the most dated and historic places at Tamil Nadu.
History
One of the well known myths connected with Siva is his victory of Tripuram – the three divine cities which the Asuras (devils) had assumed control, and wrecked nothing short of a catastrophe over them. The Devas ( divine beings) spoke to Shiva for help and requested that him spare them from the devils. Shiva made mount Meru his bow, and Vasuki the serpent, his bow-string and readied to take up arms against the Asuras. The very tip of Siva's bow ( Mount Meru) fell on earth and that got to be Sivamalai as per legend. It is otherwise called Sakthimalai in light of the fact that Goddess Parvathi had also once performed penance here.
Importance/Significance
Countless number of Tamilian scholars have showered words of praise upon Shivamalai for its distinction. Sivamalai is featured in the Tiruppugazh, SivamalaiPuranam, Sivamalai Pillai Tamizh, SivamalaiMayilViduThoothu, Siva ThangarathaSadakam and Thanipadal. The sage Agastya was said to settle on this mountain and performed meditation to raise self awareness about the Agamas. He likewise conjured a freshwater spring on this mountain from the waters of the Ganga which he got his Kamandalam. It is said this marvel occurred on KarthigaiPournami day ( full moon in the month of Karthigai) and accordingly it is worshiped by devotees as day of mighty significance. Hanuman too prayed here after being directed to Sivamalai by the sage Vyasa. He was accorded with much power and strength as Vishnu-Narasimha after his penance in Sivamalai. Hanuman, accepted, even conveyed blossoms from the banks of the Ganga to love at Sivamalai.
