Description
Samayapuram Mariamman shrine is predominantly a Hindu temple in Samayapuram nearby Tiruchirappalli in the state of Tamil Nadu. There is a strong belief among the visitors that the Lord has extensive powers over curing diseases and hence, it has become a tradition to buy small metallic duplicates, which are made with steel or silver, of various body parts which has to be cured, which needs to be deposited in the donation box. Other names of Samayapuram are Kannanur, Kannanpuram, Vikramapuram and Mahalipuram.
History
Tamil Nadu houses consist of various divine idol of Lord Shakti. A system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards Shakthi which are existent in various ages that are manifested in several shrines, Samayapuram, Arulmighu Mariamman in the district of Trichy which is one among the sacred abodes. The temple has a scenic and a beautiful view that is enriched with the sacred river Cauvery. The temple is at a distance of 15 km from Trichy and is structured in Chennai - Trichy National Highway. This Temple is known to occupy a prominent position among the temples dedicated to Goddess Shakthi. Trichy is an easily accessible place and can be touched by train through Chennai and Madurai, and places, and also via airways starting at Chennai. Lord Mariamman is an extremely powerful, and is respected a lot for the fulfillment of the desires of their devotees. People who are inflicted & affected with several diseases like smallpox and chickenpox and various other diseases, come and visit this place, also stay here and worship the Lord for quick recovery. The divine Water (Abisheka Theertham) is showered onto it post puja to help them recover quickly. There is a detached rest hall to make the arrangements for the people to stay within the temple. Chola Kings were the ruler of this reason in ancient time. Other names for Samayapuram are, Kannanpuram, Kannanur Mahalipuram, Vikramapuram and during ancient times.
Importance/Significance
The unique feature in this temple is that the chief deity, Samayapuratal or Mariamman is built of clay and sand like most of the usual conventional Mariamman idols, & hence unlike usual Hindu lords there is no abhishekam i.e (sacred bathing/ washing) performed the deity, though the "abishekam" is performed to the tiny stone structure which is in the front.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Few of the most celebrated festivals of this temple are as follows:
1. Thai Poosam Fest - Thai Month – It is celebrated in a grand manner for 11 days, the idol is taken for procession twice a day in different vahans.
2. Poochoriyal (Flower Showering Fest) – Masi Month - The Poochoriyal Festival is conducted during the last Sunday of the month Masi, during which a lot of fragrant flowers are sprinkled over the deity.
3. Chitrai Fest: Panguni – Chitra Months - The Maha Festival is celebrated for a period of thirteen days. During the 1st Tuesday in the Chitrai Month i.e. on the 10th day of the fest, Lord Mariamman is taken in a wooden car which is decorated and is pulled near the temple.
4. Golu.
More than a lakh of devotees visit to this temple to seek the blessings of the goddess.
