Description
This shrine is believed to be rather ancient and is found in the city of Srirangam, which is based in the district of Trichy that is found in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
History
The Lord of this shrine is believed to have emerged from an ocean of milk, since quite a Long time, he was being worshipped by Lord Brahma, and he asked the sun to carry on with the poojas as per vedic rules and regulations. Lord Rama who belonged to the dynasty of the sun was praying to the Almighty then, he was the one who gave away his ranganatha, in the form of a gift to Vibhishana as the latter had helped him when he was trying to save Sita from the clutches of Ravan, when she was kidnappe by him. After Lord Rama was crowned the king, in Ayodhya, Vibhishana was travelling back to Lanka, and he was exhausted and he decided to take rest for some time, and during this time, he kept the deity on the earth, later when he tried with all his might, he was unable to displace the deity from its place. Lord Perumal then told him that he wished to reside on the river banks of Cauvery; he told him that he would face Sri Lanka in a reclining form. King Dharma Chola was the one who erected this shrine later. The shrine started sinking inside the sand, because of which Emperor Valavan, who belonged to the Chola kingdom re built this shrine.
Facts/Mythology
This shrine stands on a massive hundred acre plot of land, and one can witness many different figurines which are rather beautiful which stand for the amazing sculptural ability of the state of Tamil Nadu, there are also many temples, reservoirs and halls.There are many towers, twenty one in number, to be precise, and some internal rounds- among them the fourth one is considered to be the most important. The rajagopuram, which is considered to be a tower, is the tallest of all the rajagopurams that can be found in India. There are a total of eight divine springs that can be found that include Suryapushkarni as well as Chandrapushkaeni.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
There are a number of festivals that are celebrated in this shrine, with a lot of pomp and in high spirits. Vaikunda ekadashi is celebrated during the months of December and January. In October, the lower stalk of a coconut palm tree is set to build a pandal where the festival of Rapathu is celebrated on a huge scale for a period of ten nights, also the festival of Pagal Pathu is celebrated for a period of ten days. The shrine is rather crowded and more than five lak followers of the Lord pay homage to this shrine, they are seated facing the Lord and chant religious hymns and songs in his honor. Moreover, during the Brahmotsava festivals, lakhs and lakhs of disciples are seen visiting this shrine to seek the blessings of the Lord. People from all over the state, country and even the world visit this shrine, yearly.
