Description
The shrine of Kailasanthar is found in the Thingalur village, it is situated at a distance of about eighteen kilometres from the village of Kumbakonam. The main deity of the shrine is the moon, who is referred to as Soma, but the prime idol that is worshipped in the shrine is that of Lord Shiva.
History
This place is said to be of prime significance to an ardent follower of Lord Shiva, who went by the name- Appudhi Adhigal. The word- Adhigal is actually used as an affix when referring to important influential people, whether they are considered important for the religious purposes or otherwise. He served as a great influential, and taught people how great the Guru was. He didn't engage in meditation, nor did he actually pray to Lord Shiva, he was only fixated on another devotee of Lord Shiva who was called Saint Tirunavukkarasar. He named both his sons after the man, adding a 'senior' before the elder son's name and a 'junior' before the younger son's name. He set up many charitable organizations and all of them were named after the saint. He believed that offering help or service to a disciple or a follower was like offering service to God, himself. Figurines of Appudhi Adhigal and his family members have been mounted in the shrine, as a mark of respect to them. When a serpent bit into his son, it was saint Tirunavukkarasar who saved his son's life by, making use of his ondru kolum thevaram. A renowned poet, who goes by the name Sekhizar, has told Appudhi's story in the forty six verses of the Peria Puranam.
