Description
Thirukannankudi Loganatha Perumal Temple is a magnificent temple located in the city of Thirukannangudi, in the Nagai region of Tamil Nadu. Famous as one of the 108 Divya Desams, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is worshipped here in the form of Swamy Loganatha Perumal. This is one of the famous religious tourist's spots in the state and attracts tons of tourists and devotees.
History
There is a beautiful history behind this temple. There was once a Vashishta Brahmin who was a staunch devotee of Lord Krishna. He deeply worshipped him and kept long penance. He had made an idol of Lord Krishna with butter and because of his deep and dedicated devotion, the butter never melted. Lord Krishna was very happy with the Vashishta and decided to meet him. Once, when the Brahmin was not there in his hermitage, he appeared in the form of a small boy and disfigured the idol while eating away the butter. On seeing the Vashishta approaching him, the child ran away quickly into the deep forest. After a long chase, the Vashishta caught him and tied the child to a tree. It was then that lord Krishna came back into his own avatar and gave darshan to the Vashishta. He was very happy and felt blessed after worshipping the lord. Later on, in this same spot the temple of Thirukannankudi Loganatha Perumal was built which was considered very sacred since, on the very same spot Lord Krishna had once appeared.
Importance/Significance
The temple holds a high significance among the Vasihnavites for the reason that it is a part of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu. Apart from this, the temple also forms a part of the Panchakanna Kshetrams-a holy place for Lord Krishna. Krishna is believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu and hence the importance of the temple. It is believed that if one observes penance in this temple and worship the lord, one can easily get rid of all the negative energies of life. All the more, puja's and rituals done on special occasions such as Thursdays or Janmashtmi are considered to be more auspicious. People often visit this temple to seek blessings for their children There are certain unique features of this temple which set it apart from the rest of the Divyadeshams. The presiding deity Loganatha is seen here in an imposing image. Further, the Garuda which is usually present in all the shrines of Lord Vishnu, is usually seen with his hands folded, worshipping the lord. However, this is the only temple where the hands of the Garuda are around his body and not in a folded manner. The architecture of the temple encompasses 5 tier gopurams which stands as a signature symbol unique to this temple
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Huge gatherings are usually seen on Thursday, the day of Lord Vishnu. People gather to worship, offer and chant hymns in praise of the lord.
