Description
The Thirukkoviloor Trivikrama Perumal Temple is an ancient temple which is located in the city of Thirukkoviloor, a small district of Villupuram in the state of Tamil Nadu. People believe that this temple is rather old and it is said to have been built about 2000 years ago. The temple is dedicated to Lord Trivikrama Perumal.
History
The history of the temple is very interesting. Many years ago, an emperor by the name of Mahabali lived here. Though he was a very nice king by nature, he had a wish that no one should surpass him in anything, whatsoever. In order to fulfill his wish, he decided to perform a yajna with the help of his Guru named Shukracharya. However, Lord Vishnu came to know about the desire for the yajna and hence decided a plan to curb down the pride of Mahabali. He came to earth in the form of a dwarf and visited the spot where the yajna was being performed. He asked them for three foot of land (as measured by him) to be given to him as dakshna. Guru Shukracharya however, sensed something different about the dwarf and so warned Mahabali about the sequences. Mahabali understood that this was none other than Lord Vishnu himself and hence gave him the land piece. The lord took his original form and then measured the land from one of his foot, the sky from the other foot and then gave the sign that there was no other place left for the third food of land. Mahabali understood Lords message and hence bowed his head offering him the same. The lord was pleased with him and later on in the same spot where the lord set foot in the form of dwarf, a temple was built, which is today known as the Thirukkoviloor Trivikrama Perumal Temple.
Importance/Significance
The system of 108 Divya Desams, the shrines that are dedicated to Lord Vishnu started from the verses and chants which were 4000 in number which were sung by the twelve Alzhwars at that time. This first began in Thirukkoviloor and hence the Thirukkoviloor Trivikrama Perumal Temple holds a significant position in the Hindu religion for all the Vaishnavites. It is believed that those who worship the lord here and perform the rituals as per the Vedas are granted all their wishes. Thursday is considered to be an auspicious day for worshipping the lord and lighting diyas in front of the idol.
Facts/Mythology
A unique fact about this temple is that the idol of Perumal lord is swayambhu or a self-manifested one. How the idol was formed, is still a mystery. Hence, this place is considered very sacred and pious and all the devotees of Lord Vishnu make it a point to visit this place at least once in their lifetime. Another, important feature is that it is the third tallest tower in the state that is said to measure about 192 feet.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Panguni Brahmmotsavam is a famous festival that is celebrated here on a grand scale. This extends for about 15 days during the months of March-April and attracts thousands of people.
