It is true that religious beliefs are deeply rooted in our country .Tamil Nadu, although an advanced state, worships the Lord with every first ray of the Sun.Thirumazhisai Jagannatha Perumal Temple stands as one of the three most dignified and worshipped temple of Lord Jagannath.
History
Although there are several theories on, for how long the temple has been in existence, but the records and the inscriptions maintained, gives the detail that the temple was in existence during the Chola reign. Tirumazhisai Alwar, who belonged to the 8th century, was closely associated with the temple. Thus, these assumptions conclude that, the temple has been standing in being for 1000 years.Once Lord Brahma was approached by Maharishi Athri, Brughu and Bhargava, in search of a place where they could conduct prayer and tapas. On this, Lord Brahma called the divine sculptor Mayan and handed him a weighing scale. He kept Thirumazhisai on one plate and the rest of the world to another. But the purity of the Thirumazhisai weighed his side of the scale down. After the glory of this place being realized, the sages were asked to continue the penance in the same. Lord Jagannath gave the maharishis Darshan in the sitting position.
Importance/Significance
Thirumazhisai Jagannatha Perumal Temple is one of the most important Jagannatha temples in India. Jagannatha is the name given to Lord Krishna. The Puri is referred to as Uttara Jagannath where the Lord appears standing and Tiruppulani as Dakshin Jagannat where the Lord is reclining. Thirumazhisai is said to be Madhya Jagannath, where the Lord graces darshan in sitting form. The devotees worship Mother Vaishnavi offering garlands for removal of obstacles in wedding talks. Devotees worship the Lords to save them fro sins and then they went for a dip in Bhrugu Theertha. They pray to Godddess to be blessed with child boon and prosperity.
Facts/Mythology
While Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi were in the sky flying in their Vrushab vahan, they had a glance on Thirumazhisai Azhwar was deep into his yoga state. Parvathi Devi suggested Lord get Azhwar in a word play. Abiding by her demands, Lord Shiva went to Thirumazhisai and the talks ended with a debate. Dumbfounded and impressed with the debating skill of Azhwar, Lord Shiva gave him the name “Bhakti Sara”. Thirumazhisai had a rational outlook. He sang hymns for both Saivism and Vaishnavism. Among the 12 Azhwars, Thirumazhisai Azhwar is fourth in the rankings. There is a separate shrine for Azhwar in the temple. He is supposed to have his wisdom eye on his toe.
