Thanjavur is a quite a known place in this area. The place is named after Lord Shiva, as Lord Shiva himself had come here and prayed to Lord Vishnu to get rid of a sin. It is a belief that a person who takes blessings of Lord Vishnu in this temple gets rid of his sins. Apart from Lord Vishnu the temple has shrines of Lord Brahma and Saraswati too. The temple has one of the 108 divyadesams i.e. the divine light. The temple is also known as Pancha Kamala place. History
According to the legend, lord Brahma and Lord shiva both had five heads initially. Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva got confused between the both and performed the pathapooja i.e. a ritual in which husband's feet are cleaned. Shiva got angry and cut Lord Brahmas one of the heads. The cut head got attached into Lord Shiva due to the curse of Lord Brahma. To free himself from the sins, Lord Shiva prayed to Lord Vishnu at Thirukarambanur and a part of his sin got relieved here. To get rid of the sin completely, Lord shiva visited lord Vishnu at Thirukandiyur and took a holy bath at the temple tank which is known as Kamala Pushkarani. Vishnu relieved lord shiva of his sins here and that is the reason the temple is named as Vimochanasaabha Hara, meaning the place where Lord Shivas sin got relieved. Shiva built the temple here as a dedication to Lord Vishnu.
