It forms a part of the 108 divyadesams dedicated to Lord Vishnu
History
It is believed that long back two demons appeared on earth namely Kesi and Kesan due to some flaws in the yagna which was performed by Lord Brahma. The demons created havoc on earth, troubling all the sages. Everyone lived in the danger of these demons and hence approached Lord Vishnu for their protection and safety. Lord Vishnu agreed to help them and killed Kesan. Kesi was also defeated and was used in the form of pillow by the Lord. After this event, the wife of the demon got very angry and chalked out a plan to avenge Lord Brahma. She asked help from River Ganga, pleading her to wash awe the Lord with its strong currents. However, Mother earth came to the rescue of Lord Brahma and helped the reclining Perumal (an incarnated form of Lord Vishnu) in his attempt. The water could not cause him any harm and just rotated around his neck in the form of a garland. Since the form of Perumal destroyed the Kesan demon this place got is name as KesavaPerumal.
Importance/Significance
The temple is one of the 108 Divyadesams which makes it an important Vishnu temple in India. It is believed that 12 Shiva temples were created by the 12 rudraksha which were in the hands of Lord Vishnu. Hence, the worship is deemed complete only after one has visited all the 12 Shiva temples and then visited the Adi kesava Perumal temple. Further, this is also considered as a mini tirthasthana as both the lords – Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva reside in this sacred temple. Further, those who worship this spot are believed to be relieved of the dharam chakra of life and rebirth.
