Description
Swetharanyeshwarar Temple at Tiruvenkadu, the 4th Navagraha stalam of the nine Navagraha Temples in the state of Tamil Nadu, is the house for Bhudan or Bhudha (planet Mercury). Thiruvenkadhu Bhuda Sthalam is located near Pumpuhar, approximately 10 km from Sirkazhi, 25 km east of Mayuram and 60 km from Kumbakonam. The chief deity is Lord Shiva as Swedaranyeshwarar and Goddess as Bramha Vidya Nayagi Ambal. Swetharanyeshwarar Temple has a separate sanctum sanctorum for Bhudan, one of the nine Navagrahams and the bestowal of wisdom and wealth.
History
The name Tiruvenkadu, also spelled Thiruvengadhu, means 'holy white forest' (Venn means white and Kadu means forest). It is believed that this place was bordered by thick forests on all the sides and when seen from a distance, it looked totally white, and hence the name Tiruvennkadu. In Sanskrit it is identified as Shwetaranyam (Shwetam means white and Aranyam means jungle). The place also has several names such as Aadi Chidambaram, Patala Kailash and gnana-aranya (forest of wisdom).??It is said that the Lord executed 7 of his dances - Thandavam - known as Urdhva, Bhujanga, Sandhya, Lalita, Ananda, Tripuranta and Samhara.
Importance/Significance
Tiruvenkadu Temple is bounded by 5 prakaras known as panch prakarams. Here the Lord is present in his Agoramurthi (an expression of his angry and wild form) and Nataraja (an expression of Lord Shiva, considered as the Lord of Dance) forms. The Natarajar image holds 7 weapons and instruments, namely Udukku, Khadgam, Trisulam, Kedhayam, Kapalam, Vetalam and Mani.??A unique characteristic about Swetharanyeshwarar Temple is that the representation of Lord Shiva has 5 faces Vamadevam, Tatpurusham, Easanam, Sadyojatam and Aghoram. The posture of the Nandi at the entrance of the temple is another unique characteristic here. It bears nine scars on its body and is seated at the doorway of the Devi's shrine. The face is turned towards the Lord's shrine and ears are tilted towards that of Devi, signifying that it is ready to receive orders from the Divine Couple. Devi in Her heavenly appearance of Bhadrakali has an independent temple. Besides, there is diverse temple for Ashte Lakhsmes and the Navagrahus.??Swetharanyeswara shrine has 3 theerthums which are actually sacred lake, known as Agne Theerthum, Surya Theerthum and Chandra Theerthum which are known to be shaped out of the 3 falls which fell from almighty Shiva's eyes while he was dancing (attum). The sthala vrekshums are also 3 in number - Velvam, Vadaval and Konrae. The stone writing on the walls of the shrine represents significant historical information of the Chola rule and about more than a few emperors of Vijayanagar. The rivers, Kavere and Manikarneka, run next to this sacred temple.

Praise to almighty Shiva's fiery form Aghoremurthy is measured to be of immense significance especially on Sun nights. Wednesday is the most important day to Budha and contribution for the pooja on that day is assumed to correct any Budhan Dhoshum in horoscope (Rashi). People from all over the country come to visit this temple to receive the blessing of the presiding diety.
