History
GochenkanChola was born in this place and the temple was built by him. The temple houses Goddess Shakthi. History behind the temple is an interesting one. Sarama Rishi was a saint who lived in Vuraiyur. He used to maintain a beautiful garden around his house that consisted of many rare and beautiful flowers. The saint was an ardent devotee of Thayumanavar. He used to worship Lord Shiva everyday by offering garlands made from the flowers growing in the garden. The beauty of the flowers in the garden attracted many and a local florist took advantage of it and started collected them from the garden. He used to supply the flowers to the king and the natural beauty of the flowers attracted the king and the demand for the flowers grew. As the demand increased, the florist started stealing flowers regularly from the garden. The saint noticed the missing of flowers. At last on one fine day he found the culprit and decided to take up the matter with the king. But the king who was already crazy for the flowers, did not take complaint seriously. As the king himself could not help him, the saint went to a silent place and started praying Thayumanavar. The Lord became furious about the theft and the inactivity of the king in resolving the problem. Till that the Lord was facing east and with anger he turned his position westwards where Uraiyur lies. His anger was so immense that it created sand storm that was so huge that it started damaging the entire city. Everywhere there was sand and with no knowledge about how this has happened people residing there found them helpless.People of Uraiyur went in a group and prayed Venkaliamman to save them from this dreadful situation. The Goddess was pleased and prayed to Thayumanavar to reduce his anger. As the Lord's anger subsided the sand storm stopped. But this huge sand storm rendered many people homeless and hence even now the temple is without a shelter signifying the fact that many people in this world are still without a shelter.
