Description
Usilampatti Subramanya Swamy Murugan Temple Located in the Usilampatti village of the Madurai district of the state of Tamil Nadu, the temple, as the name indicates, is fully devoted to the Lord Muruga who is incarnated in the form of Lord Subramanian Swamy. Exactly situated in the middle of the town, the temple is famous and is well connected by road and rail from all other cities and states of the country.
History
The temple is believed to be built up in the ancient age where the king of that period was not able to handle the devil activities that were performed by the demon king Narakasura, and because of this, the king then approached Lord Muruga seeking help and support. The demon king in the form of a robber was looting the people for their wealth and prosperity, seeing this, Lord Muruga also appeared in the country in the form a young man. It is unexpected to believe, but it was Lord Muruga who was incarnated in the form of young man to know the situation. But then, it should be believed that the enemies were not destroyed immediately. They were allowed to win the game till the end. But towards the end, Lord Muruga came into action and instead of destroying the enemies, he transferred one of the demon kings into a peacock which is carried even today with the Lord and is considered as the vehicle of the Lord Muruga.
Importance/Significance
The temple is located in the Madurai district of the Tamil Nadu, is mainly incarnated for the worship for the Lord Muruga. Unlike all other Murugan temples, this temple is the only place in the South India, where the deity of the lord Muruga is incarnated in the form with sword in his hand along with the vel. It is believed that since the deity is worshipped after the war between the demon kings. Lord Agastya is also worshipped here along with the deity of the Lord Muruga so as to bid respect to him. It is believed that he is found to be shapeless and formless as well. It is just worshipped as a concept that does not exist in nature. The temple also has sub deities that include Lord Vinayaga, Lord Hanuman and many more.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Since the main deity of the temple is the Lord Muruga, Thaipoosam would be the most important festival that would be celebrated with great deed of devotion in the temple. Moreover, other major festival also includes the Kirtigai, Brahmotsava, and the famous Khanda Sashti. It is to be noted that the temple is not limited to these festivals. The long list is yet to initiate. It also celebrates the festivals that are related to the sub deities also. Vinayaga Chathirthi is also celebrated with great importance. It is the birthday of the Lord Vinayaga and is given equal importance along with the other festivals.
