The temple is easy to reach from Chennai as it is 85 KMs from the state capital. There are more temples to see and worship in Uthiramerur.
History
The Kailasanathar temple is constructed during the period of the Pallavas. The work was started by Rajasimha Pallava and this was completed during the rule of his teenage son Mahendra Varma Pallava. This Rajasimha pallava is believed to have ruled the Kanchi kingdom from the years 685 AD- 705 AD.According to the local people the temple is used as a cover to protect the people during the war. The work in the temple on the architectural front is a testimony to that belief. The remains of the undercover escape route for escaping during war times. This tunnel is now in good condition and it is open to public for seeing it. What a wonderful planning and management by the then rulers which still attracts more people.
Facts/Mythology
The temple is in midst of paddy fields and without any disorder from the city. Though the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, but it is under the control of Archeological survey of India (ASI). The temple is most visited on the architectural work rather than sacred place to visit.The temple is in total ruins till a year ago. Now it is undergoing renovation works with help from local people and the Tamil Nadu state Government. Now the renovation is taking place under new methods in the engineering field. They are doing the renovation work without damaging the traditional suthai method.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
During the day of Mahashivratri people from the surrounding parts the place used to gather at the temple to watch the proceedings and abishekam to Lord Shiva. The day is most auspicious for Hindu people as they used to stay in the temple from evening to morning without going to sleep. There will be a long queue to get the darshan of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
