Description
The temple is situated in Uthiramerur which is eighty five kilometers from Chennai. The history of this village dates back to many years and it is famous for its temples, sculpture, architectural marvels and stone captions.
History
The temple is for perumal and is built by a pallava King in the year 750 AD. A ruler named as Nandivarma pallavan donated lands to twelve hundred Vedic scholars and asked them to stay in the village. In the previous years the village is called with a name Uthiramerur Chathurvedhimangalam. The temple was renovated in the year 1013 AD by Rajendra Chola and Krishnadevraya in the year 1520 AD. The presiding deity is Sundara Varadaraja perumal. In the Vaishnavite temples normally the god graces devotees in three appearances. One is standing posture, second is sitting posture and third is sleeping posture. In this temple one can see all three postures of god Vishnu. The chamber or shrine is constructed in which all three types of postures from which Lord Vishnu blesses his devotees.
Importance/Significance
In the 1ST floor of the shrine the god is with his two consorts on either side. In the second floor Lord is in sitting posture with name as Sri Vaikunda Varathar. In the second floor there is beautiful posture of Lord Krishna discourse his famous Bhagawath Geetha (Geetha in Tamil) to Arjuna. Here one can see the idol of Sri Lord Dhakshina murthy which is a rarity in perumal Kovil. The third floor the god is in the sleeping posture as Ranganatha. Also there is an idol of Lord Brahma at Lord's feet. In the third floor one can see the posture of Lord Ranganatha blesses Sage Markandeya Rishi.There are other shrines (Sannathi in Tamil) in the temple on the prakaram for Achudha Varathar, Aniruddha Varathar and Kalyana Varathar.The temple importance is further enhanced by the visit of Pandavas who were on a 13 year exile and hide themselves in the forests. They worshipped the god several times. The Pandavas are 5 brothers and in the temple the five brothers worshipped Sundara Varathar, Vaikunda Varathar, Achudha Varathar, Aniruddha Varathar and Kalyana Varathar in their order of birth. After worshipping the deities the Pandavas regained their lost power and their kingdom.This place is a rebirth of modern day democracy. The inscription scripted on the stone displays the qualifications and conditions for contesting elections. The electoral system is known as Kudavolai method. Based on the inscriptions the modern day electoral system is followed.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The famous Alwars Thirumangai Alwar, Peyalwar, Thirumazhisai Alwar and Poigai Alwar visited the temple and sung many songs in praise of the presiding deity.The temple is under the administration of Tamil Nadu Government and three kala Pujas is being performed throughout the year. Special festivals related to Lord Vishnu are celebrated with much grandeur.The temple is open for darshan from 6 AM to 12 AM and from 4 PM to 9 PM. The place is reachable from any part of the state.
