Vedaranyam Vedaranyeswarar is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is based in a small town in TamilNadu – Vedaranyam and at a distance of 45 km from Nagai. This temple is referred in the Tamil canonical art work of 7th century, which is a poem written by Tamil saint. The temple had been built by the great Aditya Chola. The temple is along the banks of the river Kaveri. The temple has several inscriptions dating back to the ancient Chola period. Everyday 6 different rituals are performed in this temple. There are idols of Vani, Rahu and Ketu, and also a shrine of Thiyagaraja. Another part of the temple premises consists of Murugan, Saraswati and Durga. There is a long and large pillar in the temple which has 12 zodiac signs encrypted in the pillar. This Vedharanyam in TamilNadu is nearby to Nagai and Kodaikarrai.
History
Vedaranyam- the name of this town is kept on the Vedrayaneswarar temple of Lord Shiva. Earlier the town was referred as Tirumaraikadu –which means the origin place of Vedas. Vedas are work of arts and scriptures of Hindu religion. As far as the history is concerned, it is said that Vedas used to worship Lord Shiva in this place and hence the name Vedaranyam. Another story says that Lord Rama who is the seventh incarnated form of Lord Vishnu came here to free himself from the sins that he had committed in his fight against the demon Ravana. You can still see the footprints of Lord Rama in the temple. After taking blessings of Lord Shiva, the vedas had locked the temple due to which Saint Tirugnanasambandar and Appar could not get into the temple. Saint Appar then sang devotional song in praise of Lord Shiva and the doors of the temple unlocked automatically. To close the door then Saint Tirugnanasambandar sang another devotional song.
Importance/Significance
The four Hindu Vedas i.e. Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samarveda and Adharvanaveda meditated here and entered from the gates of this temple and prayed to Lord Shiva. As the Kaliyug period began, these four Vedas left the place and closed the doors of temple forever until Saint Appar opened up the door. Yet, another story speaks of a rat turning into king by the blessing of Lord Shiva. The king Later came to be known as King Parikshith.
Facts/Mythology
A stone (shrine) emerged here which is now known as Buvanividanagar. There are many wells in Vedharanyam and the interesting fact is that all the wells here taste salty.

Devotees from all over Tamil Nadu come here to seek blessing from the Lord. Temle is subjected toperform many ritual and festival throughout the year. Six rituals are conducted on a daily basis here at this temple. The Brahmostsav festival of the temple is also an important festival which attracts hundreds of devotees from nearby places. Amavasai , sathurthi and pournami is celebrated with utmost zeal and fervor.
