Hayagreevar Perumal Vishnu Temple is located in the small town of Tiruvahindrapuram, district of Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu. This is one of the religious places and forms a part of the tourism of the state. Well connected by roads this is easily accessible from any part of the state. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and hence is considered very important.
History
Legends unfold the story that there was a time when the Asuras had defeated devas of the world in a very bad manner. This was due to the arrogance along with pride of devas. After their defeat, devas, sought the help of Lord Vishnu to help and protect them. He used his powerful Chakra and killed all the demons at one go. He also appeared in front of them in the form of trinity- Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Later on, in this same spot the temple of Hayagreevar Perumal Vishnu was built up which was worshipped for Lord Vishnu.
Importance/Significance
The temple is a very religious temple. It is believed that those who offer jaggery, pepper and salt in the water tank of the temple are blessed with good fortune, health and a prosperous life. People also worship here to relieve themselves from entangles of rahu and ketu. The water in the tank is also very sacred and is believed to cure rare skin diseases. The worship is considered complete, only after one has taken a bath in the tan.
Facts/Mythology
A part of the sanjeevani hill is believed to have been dropped nearby to this temple. It contains various valuable herbs which are of medicinal importance. All the more, the river flowing beside the temple known as the Garuda Nadhi is considered as pious as the Ganges. It is red in color is also its specialty. Another unique feature of this temple is that, it is the only shrine which has an idol of Lord Vishnu showcasing his third eye. Legends have spoken that only Lord Shiva has a third eye and hence this temple is very unique in nature. The idol with the third eye is placed right in front of the main gate of the temple.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Chithirai Devanatha Brahhmotsavam is the main festival of this temple which spans for a period of about 10 days. It attracts thousands of devotees and tourists from all over the world. The festival is observed with great pomp and grandeur. Some other festivals which are celebrated here are Narasimha Jayanthi, Sri Krishna Jayanthi and Aavani Pavithra Utsav. Anal wedding festival is also observed here in an elegant style. Thirumozhi also earmarks an important festival which is observed continuously for a period of 21 days. All rituals are performed and the pujas extend from morning till evening. Hymns and prayers are chanted and events such as skits are organized in the evening as a means of entertainment. All in all, this temple is worthy of visiting with family and friends.
