The Kedarnath Temple was built by the Pandavas and was revived by Adi Sankaracharya. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas - the holiest and sacred shrines of Lord Shiva. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, expounded in Tevaram. The Pandavas are said to have pleased Lord Shiva by doing penance at this spot. This temple is the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas.

It is located on the Garhwal Himalayan range near the Mandakini river. Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is only open from the end of April (Akshaya Tritriya) to November (Kartik Purnima).

During the winters, the deities from Kedarnath temple are brought to Ukhimath and are worshipped there for six months. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kedarnath, the 'Lord of Kedar Khand', the historical name of the region.
