The Trivandrum Attukal Bhagavathy Temple,is a well renowned temple among Hindus, which is situated in the southern state of Kerala. It is situated in a place called Attukal in Thiruvananthapuram. It is not far away from the Sri Padmanabhaswami temple and is popular especially for the Attukal Pingal festival that is held here, every year
Mythology says that Attukal Bhagvathy is the divine form of Kannaki, the heroine of Chilapathikaram, a Tamil work by the poet Elenkovadikal. Kannaki was married to Kovalan, who was a merchant's son. Kovalan spent all his money on a dancer and forgot Kannaki. After losing all his wealth he came back to Kannaki who had nothing but a pair of anklets. They went to sell it to the King of Madurai who mistook it for the Queen's anklet, a similar piece that had been stolen. Kovalan was beheaded as a punishment. The infuriated Kannaki showed the king that her anklets contained rubies while the queen's had pearls. She cursed the city which got destructed due to her curse. It is said that after the destruction of the city of Madurai, Kannaki went to Kerala via Kanyakumari leaving behind Madurai and on her way to a place called Kodungalloor, she decided to take a sojourn at Attukal. Kannaki is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. She, in the form of a girl approached an old man sitting at a river bank and asked him to help her cross it. The man took the child home but she disappeared there and came in his dream where she revealed her identity and asked him to construct a temple in the grove where he could find three golden lines. The old man obeyed her and built this Attukal Bhagavathy temple. Kannaki stayed at Attukal and resides there as the benevolent and powerful Attukal Bhagavathy caring for her devotees as her own children. Thousands of devotees come to her every year to receive the blessings of the benevolent Mother and relieve themselves of all their pain, sufferings and agony.
The Trivandrum Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is one of the South Indian temples, built in ancient India. Women are the major devotees of this temple and it is known among them as Sabarimala. The Mother Goddess here is worshipped as the creator of the universe and all the living forces on earth. She is both the preserver and the destroyer. It is believed that Vishnumaya incarnated as Bhagvathy to destroy evil and restore goodness in the world during Kaliyuga.
The most important festival celebrated here is the Attukal Pongala, which witnesses grand celebrations and a massive crowd. Millions of women come here during the month of Kumbham and prepare the Pongala which is rice cooked with ghee and jaggery in small pots in honor of the goddess. Many other festivals celebrated are here among which some are Mandala vratham, Vinayak or Ganesh Chaturthi, Shivaratri, Aishwarya pooja on poornima or full moon days and Nirayum Puthariyum in the month of Karkadakam.
