Description
Located at Kadri, the Kadiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is frequented by Hindu pilgrims all through the year. Divinity and serenity of the place makes it full of devotees. The suitable time to visit the temple is October to March.
History
According to stories, the Sri Khadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy has emerged from the roots of the tree known as “Kadiri”. It is a kind of Indian mulberry. Hence it is also called the “syambhu murthy” or 'self- emanating idol'. It is claimed that the idol sweats continuously after the daily rituals are done, even after being dabbed off by the Archakas present. This is an interesting story known about the temple. The legend says that Prahalad, a figure of Hindu mythology, was a devotee of lord Vishnu but his father Hirankashyap hated Vishnu and had forbidden his son from worshipping him. But Prahlad continued praying to Vishnu much to the displeasure of his father. Prahlad had immense faith in Vishnu. One day Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Lord Narsimha, a figure with the body of man and the face of a lion, and tore open Hirankashyap with the claws. He freed his devotee Prahlad from his father's tortures. It is believed that Narasimha then settled in Kadiri. Narasimha is one among the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu.
Importance/Significance
Kadiri in Sanskrit refers to a tree. The town is regarded as a holy place due to the presence of the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple. The deity here has eight hands, thus the form is called Ashta Bahu Narasimha. He appears to be tearing Hiranyakasipu and his follower Prahlada stands with folded hands.
Facts/Mythology
The temple is situated across a vast area with wonderfully sculpted idols all around. There are places like the Garbhagriha and Mukh Mandapam. These represent typically legendary Tretayug architectural works. Garbhagriha has four lions in four corners. There are four entrances to the temple. There is another temple in the same campus where an idol of Goddess Lakshmi is seated. The sacred “pushkarini” or holy pond draws many visitors. The temple is worth visiting for the wonderful ancient architecture.
